Friday morning gym convo

By: Michael Beiter

I met a former CrossFit coach who was lifting at 22 Barbell this morning.

My guy is teaching her how to lift and not get hurt.

I started asking her about what she does and we ended up talking for over an hour.

Like so many others she thought:

"If I don't have to crawl out of the gym in a puddle of sweat and feel sore for days afterward, I didn't work hard enough."

I asked her how that worked out for her.

"I got hurt a lot," she replied.

I introduced her to a concept called minimum effective dose and she shook her head in disbelief:

"How I have never caught onto this makes no sense to me."

In short, the minimum effective dose is a term we borrowed from pharmacology that asks 'what is the minimum dose of this drug needed to elicit the desired effect.'

We just apply it to exercise and nutrition and it works like this:

What is the minimum amount of lifting, cardio, and stretching we can do to get the results we're after?

What is the minimum amount of dietary restriction we can use to be effective?

We use the scientific method to test dosages of exercise and nutritional restrictions.

What do you think we find?

That most people are doing too much in the gym and with their diet. They can do less, get the same or better results, and then apply the saved energy to family, work friends, or whatever else they feel like.

It's a game-changer.
