Reframe what we do

By: Michael Beiter

I hear it all the time: “I’m anxious for our check-ins” or “Getting measured and weighed is intimidating!”

When my clients start feeling like we are wrestling with each other rather than working together in more of a dance I reframe things like this.

Suppose we are scientists. Each month is an experiment. We aim for as much control over our eating and exercise as possible, but things don’t always go as planned. So we get together and review the results of our monthly experiment by looking at the data and reviewing your emotions.

If the results of our monthly experiment are good then we don’t touch anything.

If the results of our monthly experiment are bad then we go in and aim to change ONE variable and see what happens.

We repeat this process again and again until we reach the outcomes we desire.

You may recognize this as the scientific method, but instead of hypothesizing about rocks, or chemicals, we are doing it with your body.

This process has no end and can be repeated indefinitely, which is hard for some people to understand, but in practice it is the system I built to run this business.

So think of us a team of scientists working together. We are both experimenters, you just also happen to be an experimentee.

In this way I hope you can see what we do as more collaboration than competition. Too many people think coaching entails a whistle in the mouth dictator, or an authoritarian forcing his regime of diet and exercise on unwilling participants. That crap doesn’t work. But science? And experimenting? They work.
