Megan’s Decade of Discipline: Lessons from 10 Years of Coaching

By: Michael Beiter

Megan and I will celebrate a milestone—10 years of working together in just two months. This anniversary is more than just a marker of time; it’s a testament to the transformative power of consistency, discipline, and a willingness to adapt.

Megan deserves recognition for the thousands of workouts she’s completed, the food logs she’s diligently tracked, and the incredible discipline she’s built into her life. At the same time, I’m grateful to have committed to a service career and seen it through with all the challenges and rewards that small business ownership brings.

The Journey of a Decade

A third of my clients are 10+ years into their fitness and nutrition journeys. You’d think that by this stage, they’d have it all figured out—that there’s nothing left to learn or refine. But the truth is, as I’ve gained more experience, I’ve realized that the fitness and nutrition journey never ends.

With clients like Megan, there are no scripts or one-size-fits-all approaches. Each stage becomes an experiment, and often, my role shifts from coach to observer. Megan has become so skilled that she usually leads the way, and I monitor and fine-tune as needed.

Insights from Megan’s Experience

Recently, Megan and I sat down to reflect on what has worked best for her over the years, particularly during periods when she’s not chasing new personal bests but maintaining her progress. Her insights were profound:

  • The Protein Focus:
"My shift in focus to protein has been massive,” Megan said. “Once I hit that number, my calories and other macros easily fall into place. I crave vegetables if I go more than a day without them, and if I don’t move, I become grouchy and irritable. My whole family notices!”

What’s remarkable is that this realization didn’t come overnight. Megan will be the first to tell you it took nearly a decade to fully grasp how essential protein is to her lifestyle. Everyone’s timeline is different, and that’s okay.

  • The Power of Movement:
Megan’s self-awareness about how movement affects her mood and energy has become a cornerstone of her routine.

  • Numbers as Tools, Not Rules:
When I asked her, “What was most useful for you today?” she replied, “The upper limit of body fat you suggested. That will stick out. Sometimes, I do well with numbers—they help me cut through the noise.”

Why This Matters

Megan’s journey is a powerful reminder that learning never stops, even after a decade of practice. Fitness and nutrition are ever-evolving, and what works best for you can shift as your life, body, and goals change.

Megan’s success isn’t just about the numbers or the workouts—it’s about the habits she’s built and the self-awareness she’s cultivated. Her journey proves that patience, adaptability, and consistency are the keys to long-term success.

Your Takeaway

Remember that there's always something to learn, whether you're just starting or years into your fitness. Growth doesn’t have a finish line; it’s a lifelong process. Megan’s story celebrates progress, persistence, and the power of building habits that support a fulfilling, healthy life. Here’s to the next decade of experimentation and growth—for Megan and for all of us.
