Changing Your Perspective on Food

By: Michael Beiter

Here's a snippet of a convo between a client and myself:

"My crutch: food. Food is my drug of choice - have a habit of using it to shut down sometimes vs. dealing with my emotions or anxiety. These are old habits and old stories….I am committed to making new pathways and habits. I am practicing Acceptance by writing it all down. It makes food a fact vs. a place to continue the cycle and shame and then shut down again." She said.

I replied, "Crutch: Many people have internalized inappropriate relationships with food from years of practice. It's not bad; you don't have to stop eating or eliminate all the foods you enjoy. Food is medicine, so to suggest you should stop is silly. Think of it this way, instead of eliminating and over-restricting, we're just asking you to objectify your consumption and bound it. Basically, be scientific with your eating decisions rather than letting your constantly changing feelings dictate what and how much you eat."
